Current source claiming huemul as mountain deer.

1979   ... huemul is a mountain deer similar to ibex and chamois

1991   ... occurs in high altitude forests, thickets, and grasslands in the Andes

1992   ... is a stout deer and is a mountain deer mostly at or just below tree line

1992   ... Hippocamelus with very short legs as certain adaption to mountain habitat

1998   ... lives in precipitous terrain in high altitude along border between forest and alpine grasslands, in winter below snow line in forests

1999   ... Lives at 1300-1700 m elevation in dense shrub or forest habitat

2000   ... the huemul mountain deer was better adapted to the high Andes where they thus became established

2002   ... the two Hippocamelus are high-Andean deer

2005   ... short legs, stronger build than other cervids and similar to some northern mountain ungulates; have unmistakable mountain ungulate anatomy

==>   The omission or downplaying of the fact that huemul have existed in non-forested areas far from the Andes is striking.
